Samsung Electronics says it has developed a liquid crystal display (LCD) visible almost side-on thanks to its mSWV+ and half mirror technologies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The company applied a technology called Patterned-ITO Vertical Alignment (S-PVA) on small and middle-sized LCD panels to achieve a 160 degree viewing angle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Samsung said Sunday the screen can also be seen under strong sunlight without backlight. Energy consumption is low. Conventional permeable LCDs have a contrast ratio of 250:1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a vertical viewing angle of 80 degrees and a horizontal viewing angle of 100,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but half-mirror LCDs have a contrast ratio of over 400:1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and vertical and horizontal viewing angles of 160 degrees.
The company said when the technology is applied to small and middle-sized displays,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it will allow users to watch digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) terminals or game phones both indoors and out.
Samsung plans to first apply the technology in panels for advanced mobile phones and start mass-producing them in 2006,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It will expand application to audiovisual products such as portable multimedia players and car navigation systems,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

A major Korean newspaper published two photos of a naked woman alleged to be former Dongguk University assistant professor Shin Jeong-ah on Thursday. The photos are said to have been found in the house of an influential cultural figure./Newsis A Korean newspaper has sparked controversy by publishing two photos of a nude woman said to be disgraced former art curator Shin Jeong-ah on Thursday. The photos show the front and back of a naked, smiling woman standing in front of a bookcase.
The newspaper reported that several nude photos of Shin were found in the house of an influential "cultural figure". The woman's torso has been obscured in the photos by a black square. Some people claim the photos are not really of Shin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but are composites.
Art experts who viewed the published photos said they were apparently taken by a veteran photographer identified as "H." Given the photographic style and the pose of the model,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], H is certainly the photographer of the photos, the head of an art gallery said.
But another art expert claimed the photos are composites. The expert said Shin had told him that H placed photos of Shin's face on photos of another woman's nude body for an exhibition,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but she was angered by the project and made the photographer scrap it.
A photographer agreed that the photos are composites,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], given that the outline of the hair is unclear and the feet are not set on the floor in a natural way. A relative of Shin said that H often made these kinds of composite photos for fun.
H was close to Shin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to art circle figures. The photographer had a solo exhibition at the Kumho Museum while Shin was the curator there in 1998. In 2005,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], H participated in a group exhibition at the Sungkok Art Museum while Shin was chief curator. The photographer lives in the U.S.
An art circle insider said the photos were not revealed by the photographer but were handed over to the newspaper by his acquaintance. People familiar with Shin said that the woman in the pictures is Shin three or four years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
But a former coworker of Shin's at Sungkok raised doubts about the authenticity of the pictures, pointing out that there are no scars on the arm of the woman in the photos. She said she saw noticeable scars on Shin's arm when she wore half-sleeved clothes in summer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as the curator allegedly survived the 1995 Sampoong Department Store collapse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which claimed 501 lives and injured 937.
Women's rights groups are up in arms about the publication of the pictures,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], calling it a violation of human rights. In a statement, six women's rights organizations including the Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center urged the newspaper to publicly apologize for the photos. They said the case is a clear failure to respect Shin's rights and called on the reporter and editors involved to resign and the newspaper to shut down.
Lee Mi-kyung,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], head of the Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said she was angered by the newspaper's actions and that the paper should re-examine its reporting policies.

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi says his country was well within its rights to develop its nuclear program for peaceful purposes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
In an address to a state-run foreign policy think tank in New Delhi, he repeated Tehran's vow that it will not give up its national interests, despite American and European pressure to do so.
Mr. Kharrazi says Iran is cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Commission and European countries regarding its nuclear program,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which he insists aims only at generating electricity.
"While we can enjoy to have our technology for peaceful purposes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], certainly we are ready to give any kind of guarantee that Iran would not divert to nuclear weapons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
The speech came as President Bush was in Europe trying to convince America's allies to increase the pressure on Iran,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Washington suspects Iran of secretly developing atomic weapons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and has not ruled out the use of force if the nuclear program is not abandoned.
Mr. Kharrazi accused Washington of trying to destabilize West Asia with such threats,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and said Iran is capable of defending itself. His comments were made as he wound up a two-day visit to India to strengthen bilateral ties.
Analysts say the trip also aimed at building support among friendly nations such as India against a possible U,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].S,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. strike,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
In talks with Indian officials,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he praised the Indian government's recent approval of a project to build a gas pipeline from Iran to India via Pakistan. He said the project would encourage regional peace and trade.
Decade-old negotiations on the pipeline had been stalled due to strained relations between India and Pakistan. But the peace process between the two countries is gaining momentum,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and New Delhi now says it is willing to build the pipeline if Islamabad assures adequate security.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe apparently called U.S. President George W. Bush on Tuesday to clarify any misunderstandings over his stance regarding Japan's use of military brothels during World War II. According to Japanese media reports,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Abe said in the 20-minute phone call that he had apologized to women forced into sexual slavery during World War II and his remarks on the issue hadnt been accurately conveyed.
Abes comments were simply repeating the Japanese governments stance until now. It says it apologizes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it neither admits to its forced mobilization of women to serve as sex slaves nor does it take responsibility for such actions. If he truly wishes to apologize for Japan's use of military brothels during World War II,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he must express such intentions publicly to Korea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], China and other Asian countries who suffered under Japanese aggression, as well as to the women who were forcibly mobilized into sexual slavery. But Abe just dialed up the president of the United States,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is just a third party, to make the apology. This is simply ridiculous.
It is easy to see why Abe is refusing to take responsibility and issue an apology on this side of the world, while kowtowing to Washington. Abe will visit the United States between April 26-27 and meet with Bush at Camp David. At the same time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], U.S. lawmakers are considering a non-binding resolution urging Japan to apologize formally for forcing thousands of women into the brothels. The U.S. House of Representatives is seeking to handle the resolution after hearing Abes explanation first. Abe has asked for the U.S. presidents help to avoid this prospect.
A group of right-wing Japanese lawmakers are seeking to visit the United States to block the resolution by the U.S,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. House of Representatives. That group had stirred up controversy in the past for demanding a revision of the Japanese governments landmark apology in 1993. Abe had served as the head of that group,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Just watching the actions of that group shows clearly why Abe raised the topic of the sex slaves in his phone call with the U.S,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. leader,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
While continuing to ignore the pains and calls for an apology by fellow Asians who suffered, Japan has trembled with fear every time the United States,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Canada,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Germany or other Western nation began criticizing it. Japan may be an economic powerhouse. But when it comes to a sense of morality and ethics, Japan is probably one of the worlds poorest nations.相关的主题文章:

Major Chinese banks are currently stopping or restricting remittances or payments to North Korea after the North's announcement of what it claims was a nuclear test,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it emerged Monday. Chinese banks in Dandong, where cross-border trade is concentrated,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], recently started restricting banking transactions with North Korea, an official with the South Korean Embassy in China said. The restrictions, in fact, started in March this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when the U.S. imposed financial sanctions on Macaus Banco Delta Asia after designating it Pyongyangs primary money laundering concern.
But not all Chinese banks are doing so,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], each bank and branch having its own policy. Sources say it does not look as if the Chinese government is ordering them to do so; rather banks have started doing so on their own. Rumor is spreading among traders doing business with North Korea in China that all financial accounts with North Korea including those by North Korean traders in China could be frozen.
In this photo released by the World Food Program a North Korean child peers through a window at a creche in Hyangsan, in North Korea on Thursday. Millions of needy North Koreans face "real hardship" this winter due to cuts in food aid from China and South Korea and the North's decision to accept less World Food Program assistance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the UN agency said Monday./AP
North Korean workers in China are leaving the country in droves after Norths claimed nuclear test. A businessman operating a sewing factory in Shenyang, China, said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Some 100 North Korean workers in my factory returned home three days ago because the Chinese authorities didnt renew their work permit. Banks in Dandong and Shenyang, where many businesses trading with North Korea have accounts, are seeing an increasing number of them not receive payments for exports to the North. Since the U.S. froze North Koreas accounts in the Macau bank, it takes three or four times longer for us to get paid for imports to the North, and this is hurting us badly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a businessman trading with the North said. We cant do business with the North any longer.
As official trade between the North and China shrinks, smuggling between the two countries is thriving, local people say. An ethnic Korean in Dandong said if a North Korean vessel ships 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 tons of iron ore to a port here, it officially reports only 100 ton of them and smuggles the rest. Smuggling covers almost everything from iron ore to bronze,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], TVs, computers, petrochemical products, antiques and maritime products. That is why many feel how determined the Chinese authorities are in cracking down on smuggling will determine the success of sanctions against the North. Locals say they have not heard of any Chinese crackdown on smuggling to and from the North, nor do they expect one.
Customers wait in line at a Wangjing branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) on Monday afternoon.
China clearly stated its opposition against military action in the UN resolution against the North over its claimed nuclear test,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], calling for an appropriate level of sanctions. Beijing says the ultimate goal should be getting the North to return to the six-party talks on its nuclear program, not forcing regime collapse. Some expect China to reduce,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rather than stop,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], its supply of oil to the North.
Barbed-wire fences set up along the road between downtown Dandong, a Chinese border city with North Korea, and Donggang.
Meanwhile, China is preparing for an emergency in North Korea. It is setting up barbed-wire fences along the border near the Yalu and Tumen rivers where the military units of the provinces there took charge of guarding the area three years ago. The barbed-wire fences are being extended near Changbai County and the Tumen River. A Chinese official said the fences were put up after consultations with the North because we needed to draw up a clear border between us and North Korea because of the narrowness of the river or newly built roads. But some say the main goal is to prevent a mass exodus of North Koreans when the regime falls apart. Experts say another reason China is building up its military strength and carrying out more military exercises near the border with the North is to prepare for regime collapse in the north. The new 60-km long road along the Yalu River is also said to serve strategic military purposes.

Kim So-mi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 22-year-old student at Seoul National University, has caught the nations attention with her appearance in an Organon TV commercial for birth control pills. Appearing in a spot on a subject many would consider taboo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kim highlights Koreas generation gap with her frank comments on learning and love.
Ads for condoms and contraceptives that had been confined to magazines have only since January been cleared for TV. The commercial featuring Kim is shown on the women's/fashion channel OnStyle. "I'm Kim So-mi from the class of 2005 at Seoul National University,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she is heard to say. "If you want to do love right,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I think you have to be really smart. It would make me sick to cry and pout like a fool. Women who are in love have to be really careful."
Kim was born to parents who emigrated to Germany. She says she hesitated at first when the offer to appear in the spot came, but her older brother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who studies in Germany,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], talked her into it. "It's not like youre coming out with your clothes off,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or doing something bad on screen, there's not going to be a problem,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he told her. Kim agrees. "I don't think it's something I need to feel guilty about," she says. But she reveals she only found out about the pill when she was doing the shoot.
Kim,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who majors in German-language education,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], plans to become a double major next year, adding business administration. But if the right opportunity presents itself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she would jump at the chance to do some more modeling.

The conglomerate will be especially focused on raising the cash flow headed towards R&D in prospective fields of its three major industries -- electronics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chemical, and telecommunications -- by 20 percent from last year. LG announced Thursday it has resolved to invest a total of W10.5 trillion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], W7.3 trillion going to facilities and W3.2 trillion on research and development.
This parallels the amount of investment the group made last year, which is estimated at W10.4 trillion. Notably, the investment in research and development has been augmented by W500 billion. In electronics field, the group will focus the investment on developing next-generation mobile phones,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], digital televisions, liquid crystal display (LCD),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], plasma display panel (PDP),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], home network, and digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB). In the chemicals division, the company plans to concentrate on research of polyvinyl chloride (PVC),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ABS,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], batteries,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], polarizing plates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and clean energy. As for the telecommunication fields,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it has keen interest in the triple play service (TPS), which wraps high-speed internet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], internet calling and broadcasting into one, and broadband convergence network (BCN).
With this more aggressive investment strategy, LG is aiming for W92 trillion of sales this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is 10 percent greater than last years numbers. The conglomerate has also set the goal of exporting US$46.4 billion, up 16 percent from last years figure, in order to seize a dominant position in the global market. LG Chairman Koo Bon-moo said in his new years speech that the accumulation of core technology is essential in order to survive amidst a changing environment.

Government and opposition supporters have clashed in Lebanon's capital,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with at least two people killed and at least 20 others wounded.
Lebanon's military declared an overnight curfew Thursday in an attempt to quell the clashes that broke out near Beirut's Arab University. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah urged his followers to obey the curfew,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The fighting began inside the university and quickly spilled into the streets of the surrounding neighborhood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Supporters of the pro-western government and those who support the Hezbollah-led opposition fought with sticks and stones,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Rioters smashed nearby cars and burned tires,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Army troops were called in to restore order,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

Earlier Thursday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an international conference on aid to Lebanon raised almost $8 billion for the struggling nation.
The Paris conference was also meant to increase support for Lebanon's government in its power struggle with pro-Syrian Hezbollah,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
French President Jacques Chirac,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who hosted the conference, said Lebanon needs international support "more than ever" after last year's war between Israel and Shi'ite Hezbollah that destroyed much of Lebanon's infrastructure.
On Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a Hezbollah-led strike paralyzed Lebanon as the opposition tried to force Prime Minister Fuad Siniora to resign.
Lebanese police blamed the violence surrounding Tuesday's strike for the deaths of three people and injuries to 170 others.

The tension caused by Japan's marking of Korea's Dokdo islets as part of Japanese territory in instructors' teaching manuals is leading to much discussion among various experts on Northeast Asia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Earlier in the week the local Northeast Asian History Foundation held a seminar to discuss Japan's scholastic movement to educate its public with distorted information. Experts said the Dokdo islets were rarely marked on Japanese maps until the 1990s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but then gradually began appearing on maps leading to a classification as Japanese territory beginning in the new millennium.
But not all Japanese experts agree with their government. On Wednesday five local groups,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including heads of Japanese civic groups like Peace Boat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and other Japanese experts held a Korea-Japan peace symposium to discuss the direction the two nations should take.
Japanese civic group founder Takada Ken said the public was for changing the peace laws in the 1990s but in the 2000s that trend changed. The Head of Peace Boat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kawasaki Akira,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said denuclearization,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cooperation in non-military areas and downsizing military spending are needed for peace in Northeast Asia.
China's international relations experts say Japan is aiming to rebuild its "oceanic power" to regain its key strengths as the nation originally relied on its maritime powers through World War II,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Chinese experts say Japan's Democratic Party with the help of Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda have passed economic and finance policies to do just that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Japan is currently engaged in a dispute over Korea's Dokdo islets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], four islands at the end of Russia's Kuril island chain and China's Diaoyutai islands. Local experts agree that Japan has focused on strengthening its military power altogether and creating controversy over Dokdo is just part of the plan.

Israeli soldiers scuffle with a Jewish settler youth as army bulldozers demolish uninhabited former Egyptian resort homes outside the Jewish settlement of Shirat Hayam in the southern Gaza Strip, Sunday June 26, 2005
Israeli settlers and soldiers have clashed in the Gaza Strip, as the government steps up plans to withdraw from the area this summer.
Trouble began in Gaza when Israeli army bulldozers moved in to demolish abandoned buildings on the beachfront. The soldiers were confronted by angry settlers who blocked the bulldozers with their bodies and climbed on top of them. They shouted, "Jews do not expel Jews!" The protesters were dragged away kicking and screaming.
Then, one of the soldiers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a West Bank settler, refused to obey orders to evacuate the demonstrators.
"This is not right,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!" the soldier said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. "This is not justice." The soldier was arrested.
The clash could be a preview of what is to come in less than two months, when the government is due to implement its so-called "disengagement" plan. And then the army will not be dismantling abandoned buildings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but rather the homes of more than eight-thousand settlers who will be evacuated. Aliza Herbst is a spokeswoman for the settlers.
"We need to stop and think again that we are headed for disaster, the state of Israel's headed for disaster, security wise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], socially,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that we need to stop and think again about the disengagement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
The clash came as Israel's Cabinet approved a controversial plan allowing the evacuated Gaza settlers to move together as a group to the nearby coastal area of Nitzanim. The aim is to dampen resistance by offering the settlers some prime beach real estate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. But Gaza settler Rachel Sapperstein told VOA that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon can keep his beachfront property,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"We do not even want the land that he is offering us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we want to stay home, in our houses," said Ms. Sapperstein.
Mr,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Sharon's plan to move the settlers to Nitzanim is also facing opposition from environmentalists. They say the government is ruining the last unspoiled beach property in Israel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

Korea's on-again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], off-again economic recovery is not yet benefiting its major companies, who appear to have experienced a slowdown in business this just concluded first quarter.
The Chosun Ilbo surveyed business results of 50 top listed companies estimated by 32 securities companies along with financial database research firm FnGuide,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and concluded that the companies' net profits dropped by 12.8 percent over last year's first quarter. Among manufacturing companies only,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], excluding financial businesses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the slowdown may be as much as 21.8 percent.
Experts say that the decrease is due to a slowdown in the worlds IT industry, high oil prices, and a weak dollar. The fact that businesses posted record sales in the first quarter of last year makes figures look especially bad.
Large IT companies in particular saw their business results shrink according to the estimate, casting a dark cloud over the countrys entire business performance. Samsung Electronics net profits are expected to plunge by 34.8 percent from W3.139 trillion (US$3 billion) in the first quarter of last year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to W2.469 trillion this first quarter. LG Phillips LCD is likley to record a deficit of W52.5 billion due to the global downward trend of LCD prices.
Steel and oil companies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], saw their business continue to improve. With growing signs of recovering domestic consumption, the performance of financial,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], retail,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and construction businesses also grew.
Cho Hong-rae,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], vice president of Dongwon Securities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said whether the economic recovery continues into the second quarter depends on the degree to which the gain in financial and retail companies can make up for losses in the IT business.
